Today, International Day of Forests, we emphasize the importance for the forest area that users and companies bet on the use of certified paper and cardboard (FSC® and PEFC).

El uso de papel sostenible (FSC® y PEFC™) garantiza la salud y el futuro de los bosques

The UN lists 215 international and world days or weeks dedicated to relevant themes in its official list, and forests also have their own day. After all, forest area is crucial for life, including our own. Today, March 21, is International Forest Day. In other words, the perfect day to spread the word, raise awareness and learn what each individual can do to protect them. In this article we will focus on paper.

“Reading on paper pollutes less than searching on Google”, published the ABC newspaper on 11/22/2022. And the report opened with these figures: each Google search results in the emission of 0.2 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere and printing a book involves 1.2 kg, according to the Spanish Association of Pulp, Paper and Cardboard Manufacturers (Aspapel). How many searches are done in the average time spent reading a book? This would be an important question, but not the most important. What is the impact of book production on nature? There is a quick answer, if the book has been printed on FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) paper, this impact becomes an opportunity.

The FSC® and PEFC seals are the two most relevant certifications that guarantee that the paper used as raw material comes from certified and sustainable forests. This means, among many other things, that the logging that is carried out to manufacture this paper is controlled and that the forests are reforested.

FSC® and PEFC are seals, i.e. any buyer (person, company, administration) can choose paper or board that displays them and thus contribute to a very positive trend: in the last few years 25 years, the deforestation rate has been reduced by 50%. and the goal of zero-deforestation is closer. The UN says so, attributing it to “ambitious measures to restore degraded forests and plant more trees”. For example, certified paper.

At MailTecK & Customer Comms Group, as a sustainable supplier, we are convinced that using FSC® (C120858) and PEFC (PEFC/14-38-00114) paper and board internally and in our customer projects is a powerful way to contribute to the health of the forests. This commitment to a sustainable paper chain, with custody certificates, is also supported by ISO 14001 (environmental management systems). It is also a fundamental part of our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy.

We combine this commitment to SDG 15 (Life of Terrestrial Ecosystems) with our work for our customers’ digital transition and the environmental benefits it produces. And all this makes us a supplier at the forefront of sustainability in our area of activity.

Some truths about paper and channel printing

As a consulting firm specialized in multichannel communication processes, at Customer Comms we know that the best communication between companies and users is the one that uses online but also offline channels: printing. And as we have seen, the use of the print channel, i.e. paper and board, can also be conscious and sustainable.

On the occasion of the International Day of Forests we have designed an infographic that shows some truths related to the use of paper and cardboard. Did you know that this material can be considered a symbol of the circular economy? And that 80% of the pulp purchased by the European paper industry is certified? As a result, the continent’s forest area grows every year by an area similar to that of 1,500 soccer fields.

You can find this data and much more at our infographic “Some truths about paper and the printing channel”. And you can decide, after seeing it, to use a supplier that is committed to FSC® paper and board. and PEFC to contribute to the health of the forests or, in other words, to the health of the planet.
