Environmental certifications have a varied function: they show the real sustainability achieved by the companies that obtain them, they help organizations to know their current situation in a very precise way, they offer very valuable information to improve their environmental performance and they mark a differential position with respect to other competitors.
They can also be taken as a challenge to reach higher levels of sustainability, which is always positive for companies, society and the planet. Today we talk about the renewal of our calculated Carbon Footprint certificate and how we have reached a new Zero Waste level, all audited by AENOR.
New level of Zero Waste certification
Last year we told you what the Towards Zero Waste certificate means and what it is for. Towards Zero Waste certificate. We also explain the importance of the word “towards” in this denomination. Today we tell you that we have obtained the Residue certificate. Zero, i.e. we have raised the level of recovery of our waste from 86.01% to 94.41%. This “towards” indicated that we were on the way to achieving a very important goal, and now the new certificate indicates that we have achieved it. But there is still room for improvement.
We have achieved this new category thanks to the recovery of three new types of waste (plastics, liquid inks and aqueous liquid waste), in addition to all the types of waste we had already been working with. In collaboration with our partner manager, we have managed and systematized the final recycling of these wastes, with a registered and reliable traceability.
Valorization in sustainable development
Waste recovery is essential to advance in two key concepts for the planet and to slow down or reverse the effects of climate change: the circular economy and decarbonization.
In terms of the circular economy, proper waste management makes it possible to recover valuable materials that can be reused to manufacture new products. This also extends the life cycle of resources and makes the extraction of virgin raw materials unnecessary. It also plays an important role in reducing landfill waste, which in turn protects soil, water and air from contamination. All this while promoting innovation and employment and thus having a positive impact on the economy.
In terms of decarbonization, the energy recovery of waste replaces the use of fossil fuels with fuels such as biogas to produce electricity, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, waste-to-energy can improve the efficiency of certain industrial processes and reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
Renewal of the calculated Carbon Footprint certificate
AENOR’s Calculated Carbon Footprint is one of the most recognized certifications of environmental practices, even more so if it includes the three scopes, as is our case in the renewal we have just obtained.
This certificate accredits, as its name indicates, the calculation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions emitted by a company in the development of its activity in a verified manner.
In other words,Carbon Footprintcalculated returns a quality emissions inventory and accurate data that helps the companies that achieve it to know their environmental “state”. This allows entities to know their points of improvement and work on a detailed strategy to optimize their green performance.
The different scopes
The fact that the certificate covers all three scopes ensures that all emissions, both direct and indirect, are taken into account to provide a complete picture of the environmental impact of the certified company. The scopes are defined as follows:
- Scope 1: direct emissions from sources controlled by the company, such as boilers, own vehicles, etc.
- Scope 2: indirect emissions produced in the generation of electricity, heat or steam.
- Scope 3: other indirect emissions such as those derived from the supply chain and use of products sold.
Benefits derived from this certificate
The main benefit of obtaining this certificate is for the environment: the more and better companies know about their emissions and where they originate, the easier it will be to improve their environmental performance and establish reduction plans, which will translate into a direct and valuable positive impact on the planet.
On the other hand, the advantages enjoyed by the companies are, to cite the most relevant ones:
- Compliance with national, supranational and international regulations and standards.
- Credibility and transparency for customers, investors, regulators and other stakeholders stakeholders.
- Improved reputation in a world where consumers and investors increasingly value the environmental commitment of companies.
- Access to new markets, as some certifications are sometimes essential requirements for participation in public and private tenders.
- Identification of opportunities for improvement in reducing emissions or optimizing operational efficiency. This, in turn, can translate into significant cost savings.
For MailComms Group, both certificates complement each other in order to know in detail our environmental performance and actively participate as a sustainable supplier. sustainable supplier (trained by the UN Global Compact Program), in the development of a responsible and environmentally friendly supply chain.
All this is possible both because of the possibilities for improvement offered by the details gathered during the audits and because of our ability to inform the stakeholders who ask us. In this way we influence and accompany the other stakeholders to obtain more comprehensive results.
