Our specialty is to accompany our clients in their sustainable digital transition processes, through multichannel communications and transactions with full legal reliability. One of the realities of the market is the need to make digital and physical channels coexist in this transition plan. This difference marks our sustainability plan included in our corporate social responsibility strategy.
Paper continues to be an unavoidable channel, both because of business rules linked to current regulations and because of the preferences of the customers themselves. Its relevance is manifested in communications with customers of any kind, whether transactional, marketing or with evidentiary value. At MailTecK & Customer Comms we work on many aspects related to sustainability, especially those related to the environment.
- At MailTecK we use paper from controlled and sustainable forests with PEFC and FSC certification (custody certificates).
- Environmental management in all of the organization’s processes, certified in accordance with ISO 14001 (environmental management systems).
- Our management and reduction of our carbon footprint based on the ISO 14,064 standard (greenhouse gases) and whose certification is our next objective.
Papers from controlled and sustainable forests with PEFC and FSC certification (stewardship certificates).
At MailTecK we follow a careful strategy that combines the use of either PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) or FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) paper and cardboard with digital processes designed from the philosophy of efficiency, offering great results in terms of carbon footprint reduction and nature protection. That is, in the fight against climate change.
We are, today and in our area of activity, the only supplier that achieves for its customers all the environmental benefits derived from digitization and also the benefits of using certified sustainable media.
Incidentally, the PEFC and FSC acronyms certify that the paper comes from forests that are managed in an environmentally appropriate, economically viable and socially beneficial way for the community to which they belong. Our commitment in this aspect is certified by Aenor based on ISO 14001 (environmental management systems) and PEFC and FSC (chain of custody) standards, which we explain in the article Our environmental management as a strategic part of Corporate Social Responsibility.
Paper is 100% RECYCLABLE and is the most recycled material in Spain . This fact allows us to close the life cycle of paper, which, let’s remember, starts from a sustainable origin, and ends in a sustainable way, since it will be part of a new product in the future.
Our commitment to a sustainable paper chain brings together the characteristics, track record, potential and commitment that allow us to be part of the solution to climate change mitigation. For example, as a result of this type of policy, 30% more trees are being planted in Spain today than 10 years ago, an increase of 40% in Europe.
1. – Environmental management of processes according to ISO 14.001 (environmental management systems).
At Mailteck, we have been ISO 14,001 certified since 2015, which has allowed us to advance in sustainability in all aspects of our process:
- Raw materials:
- Sustainable paper.
- Use of fast drying inks, eliminating the use of varnish as a protective element for printing.
- Biodegradable plastics (biodecomposition from 3 to 5 years):
- Recommendation to our customers to replace conventional plastic cards (PVC) and envelope windows with biodegradable plastics.
- Replacement of shrinkable plastics in conventional packaging with biodegradable plastics.
- Production equipment: investment analysis no longer only considers concepts such as profitability, productivity, total cost of ownership, etc. Nowadays, the impact on the environment is also of great importance to ensure sustainability. In fact, it is one of the decision factors when purchasing equipment. As an example, Xerox Baltoro equipment, the latest investments of Mailteck & Custommer Comms, which are characterized by:
- Almost 90 % of its weight is recyclable material.
- They consume less energy than the average of equivalent equipment.
- They take up less space than the average of equivalent equipment.
- They use “non-toxic” inks.
- Facilities: play a fundamental role in the set of factors that have an environmental impact. We have carried out improvement actions such as:
- LED lighting in factories and offices.
- Use of presence sensors and time programmers for turning on and off lighting and air conditioning systems.
Installation of supply analyzers in different sections to measure and control electricity consumption, as well as to confirm the reduction in consumption once the improvements have been implemented.
2. – Our carbon footprint management according to Carbon Quota
CarbonQuota, which is an independent industry organization that combines science, technology and analysis to make reliable measurements of carbon emissions, has conducted a comprehensive report of our carbon footprint in several areas, and this analysis is in itself a certification.
In 2020, MailTecK & Customer Comms’ emissions in its direct operations were reduced by 43% compared to the previous year, with notable decreases in vehicle fuel use, both company and employee fuel use, and also in electricity consumption. If we take into account only these three categories, the drop in CO2 emissions is 53 % (from 739.61 t in 2019 to 342.67 t in 2020, savings equivalent to that of 700 flights, round trip, between the Canary Islands and the Iberian Peninsula).
Carbon intensity ratios also provide interesting readings. They relate carbon emissions per FTE (full-time employee), square meters of buildings, turnover or purchase of raw materials. The reduction in all these indicators is significant, if we compare 2020 with 2019. The figures are below the industry average, in some cases up to 50% lower. CarbonQuota not only provides results in its reports but also guidelines for further improvement in reducing emissions.
We are sustainable and have developed a corporate plan to become more so. We cannot conceive of our business without aligning it with processes that improve the health of the planet and the well-being of people. And we know how to transfer these best practices to our clients as a cross-cutting part of our projects.
